Transforming Data into Actionable Insights

It is estimated that more than two quintillion bytes of data are currently being generated worldwide every day as a result of the unprecedented levels of connectivity which have been made possible by the emergence of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

As a result, almost every organisation now has access to more data, from many more sources, than ever before. But without context or meaning, it remains nothing more than just data and, for those organisations wanting to establish themselves at the cutting-edge of their field, that’s simply not good enough.

The majority of organisations recognise that, instead of just storing data, they should be thoroughly analysing it, in order to reveal those hidden insights which will allow them to improve their decision making and enable the prediction and prevention of disruptive incidents. However, with such an abundance of data now being sent and received around the clock, how can organisations ensure that none of it slips through the net and that it is being analysed in the most effective manner?

An Industrial Information Management (IIM) solution allows organisations to collect, store, retrieve, display and analyse their industrial data, enabling them to predict and prevent disruptive incidents, such as unplanned downtime, with greater accuracy, whilst also providing improved cost control.

The data aggregated by an IIM solution is transformed into actionable insights, which further improve the overall effectiveness of a system, helping companies to troubleshoot problems and identify key trends by allowing more data to be received from more sources. This also improves their ability to track downtime, as the current state of any device or asset can be viewed at any time which, in turn, enables even better predictive maintenance and helps businesses to know what their equipment is going to do before it does it, from a major shutdown to a single security camera that is preparing to go offline.

Additionally, if anything does go awry, an IIM solution helps to pinpoint exactly what went wrong before ensuring it doesn’t happen again by using historical information to facilitate continuous improvements. IIM solutions also help organisations to bridge the IT/OT information gap and improve their operations securely and with greater flexibility.

Recently, a construction company with sites worldwide wanted to implement an IIM solution in order to streamline its operating processes, having struggled to do so previously as a result of having numerous disparate and unconnected sites. Additionally, not all the sites had a SCADA provision onsite. Now, having implemented an IIM solution, data from every site, regardless of location, is collected and stored on a cloud-based platform, before the information gleaned from the data is sent back to the relevant sites to be actioned, helping to make sure that the right metrics are in the right hands, wherever they may be.

For other companies in the same situation, an Industrial Information Management solution will allow them to use their data more effectively too.
